The 996 cars used several versions of the M96, water-cooled engine in 3.4 296HP, 3.6 320HP and later on, 3.8 litre (X-51) displacements. These engines were mated to the G96 transmissions to help contain costs over previous gearboxes. While these engines are very good performers, some have suffered some mechanical issues due to manufacturing and design.
996′s respond very well to suspension upgrades such as shock & spring changes, adjustable coilover kits, and adjustable antiroll bars, as well as engine software changes for more predictable handling, improved throttle response and more mid-range power. The stock brakes are excellent for street driving, however heavy track use commands some brake upgrades to improve thermal dissipation capacity. Shifting can be improved with aftermarket shifters, too. Rear suspension link upgrades really stabilize these cars when equipped with DOT-spec race tires.
