964 and C2 Turbo

964964′s are one of the world’s most modifiable cars due to commonality of components during its production and this is one reason why they are so popular. The inherent durability made these the most successful production-based race cars of all time.

One can upgrade the springs, shocks, bushings, install adjustable anti-roll bars, and brakes for street use, Driver’s Education events, or competition without much effort and every air-cooled engine will interchange, provided the right components are installed.

Below is a brief overview of  these superb air-cooled cars and their features as well as differences. Contact us for more details and consultation about improving every aspect of these cars.

964 C2/C4, RS America 1989-1994

Porsche learned a great deal from the earlier 911′s as well as the 959 and one of the results was the superb 964 chassis. These were much stiffer than any of their predecessors and designed for all-wheel drive at the same time. The shortcomings of torsion bar suspensions were addressed by using coilover suspension components and improving the behavior of the semi-trailing arm rear suspension with track-correcting bushings (ala 928) to control unwanted toe-out during throttle changes. Along with the front suspension’s negative scrub radius, this made the 964 much easier and predictable to drive without losing the character of the semi-trailing arm cars.

The first 964 cars made in 1989 were C4 AWD models, followed by the C2 2WD versions beginning in 1990 to 1994. Special versions were made that include the Carrera RS (Euro-only), RS America, along with various wide-body models. Porsche also made some customer race cars for various Euro and North American Carrera Cup and Porsche Cup race series. These Cup cars, along with the full-race RSR 3.8 models, were very successful and reliable race cars. The RSA was a stripped version of the C2 for the North American market and intended for enthusiasts who valued a little less weight and fewer ameneties.

All 964 platforms are excellent candidates for improvements. Modifications such as firmer spring & shocks, matched coilover kits, adjustable anti-roll bars, are just a few of the things one can alter to improve the handling and enjoyment of these automoblies. C4′s suffer from some strong understeer due to the deisgn of the AWD system, however this can be aleviated with the right combination of suspension components.

964 C2 Turbo, 3.3 litre 1991-1992 and 964 C2 3.6 Turbo 1994

Porsche produced a limited number of C2 Turbo’s in two versions; one with a 320HP 3.3 litre engine and one with a 360HP 3.6 litre engine. Special editions were also offered with more power and different bodywork. These cars featured the improved 964 chassis features that made these cars more forgiving than their predecessors as well as the much-superior G50/52 5-speed transmission. 3.6 Turbos also used the larger Big Red calipers and rotors to match the improved acceleration.

C2 Turbos can be improved in a number of ways that include (but not limited to) suspension, better engine response, and close-ratio gears for enhanced acceleration.
