930 1976-1989

930

930′s are one of the world’s most modifiable cars due to commonality of components during its production and this is one reason why they are so popular. The inherent durability made these the most successful production-based race cars of all time.

One can upgrade the torsion bars, shocks, bushings, anti-roll bars, and brakes for street use, Driver’s Education events, or competition without much effort and every air-cooled engine will interchange, provided the right components are installed.

Below is a brief overview of  these superb air-cooled cars and their features as well as differences. Contact us for more details and consultation about improving every aspect of these cars.

Porsche produced the 930 from 1976 to 1989 in two versions: the 3.0 litre cars from 1976 to 1977, and the 3.3 litre model from 1978 to 1989.

Besides the obvious body differences, 930′s had different front and rear suspension geometry, some of which were needed for the homologation of the 934 & 935 race cars. The front suspension incorporated some anti-dive by lowering the front of the A-arms and the rear suspension’s trailing arms had revised pickup points for more camber gain and some anti-squat under hard acceleration. 3.0 litre cars maintained the same brakes as the previous 2.7 Carrera models, however the 3.3 litre ones got the 917-based Brembo 4-piston calipers and larger rotors. 930′s had larger rear torsion bars with later versions getting larger anti-roll bars.

3.0 Turbo Carrera’s used a turbocharged version of the Carrera 3.0 engine without an intercooler, however the 3.3 930′s were equipped with a (small-ish) intercooler and appropriate rear tail made specifically to incorporate that feature. US and European versions were equipped with different heat exchangers and mufflers to account for the power differences. All 930′s came with the ultra-strong 4-speed transmission for 934 & 935 homologation purposes with the exception of the 1989 930 which came with that unique, one-year-only, G50/50 5-speed.

930′s are one of the most modifiable cars in the lineup with many options for improving the handling, throttle response, acceleration, and top speed of these powerful cars. The biggest deficiencies of the 930 are throttle lag compounded by the ultra-wide ratio transmission so these are among the first things to address.

Exhaust changes, turbocharger replacement, muffler changes, and re-gearing will totally transform these cars into a powerful machine that is FAR more fun to drive. Follow that with some well-chosen suspension modifications complete the package to take full advantage of all that power.

There are many options available for these cars, but here is an example of a few some cost-effective, worthwhile modifications for street use.

  • 22mm/29mm Torsion bars
  • Bilstein HD/Sport shocks
  • Adjustable anti-roll bars
  • B&B header/heat exchangers
  • Garrett ball-bearing turbocharger
  • Larger intercooler
  • Tial wastegate
  • Modified Airflow Metering Unit (additional fuel)
  • Twin-ignition
