These cars were a radical departure from their air-cooled predecessors with a much better chassis, suspension, and different power train from the naturally-aspirated cars.e 962-based 4-cam water-cooled engine designed by Hans Meztger.
The TT/GT-2 cars had the Hans Metzger designed, 962-derived, 4-cam water-cooled engine thats was much more robust than the N/A vehicles along with a cable-shifted version of the G50 transmission. This powerplant was far better suited for forced induction than the previous air-cooled motors and able to safely withstand more boost pressure for durability. These engines respond very well to several stages of software upgrades as well as turbocharger modifcations for power levels up to 600HP without internal changes. BHP upgrades beyond 600HP require different rods for reliability and other oiling modifications are recommended as well. GT-2′s came with larger turbochargers and intercoolers than the TT cars which can be added as needed, although matching software is required.
The 996/997 chassis’ were much stiffer than the 993′s and with their longer wheelbase and simialr 5-link rear suspension, offered another dimension of handling and controllability. 996RS (Europe-only) and 997 TT/GT-2′s received suspension geometry improvements resulting from the RSR racing program. Further, GT-2′s had the two-piece lower arms that allowed more range of camber settings to accomodate race tires. Handling can be really improved with suspension upgrades as well as installing adjustable rear control links for more precise control and feedback. Adjustable coilover kits allow the owner to tailor the ride and handling to the conditions and type of use.
These cars were the first to offer the PCCB ceramic brake rotors for major weight reductions, albeit with some track-related issues. We usually replace the PCCB’s with iron rotors for much improved durability and lower cost when one is doing DE events.
There are many suspension upgrades available for these cars that range from a relatively spring/shock package to adjustable coilover kits, adjustable rear suspension links, camberplates, and adjustable anti-roll bars. 996 cars can be significantly improved with a package of 996 GT-3RS suspension components that update that chassis to full 997 GT-3 spec.
Engine performance can be improved with several levels of GIAC switchable software upgrades ranging from 470 to 600+ BHP. Some of these require different turbochargers, intercoolers, and exhaust modifications.
